SBS detects critical chemicals released from lithium-ion batteries, during various stages of battery malfunction, before a thermal runaway (smoke or fire) is initiated. Or smoke during various stages of battery failure.

The device is sensitive to broad range of eluents and oxidative compounds but primarily relies on detection of common electrolyte components such as EC (ethylene carbonate) and DMC (dimethylcarbonate).
