SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT COMMITMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

For us, sustainability is part of our everyday work, and we want to set an example in sustainable business. As proof of this, we are committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Compact. Our work has led to an EcoVadis Silver Medal in 2023.

A PIONEER IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Internationally recognised for evaluating the sustainability of corporate supply chains, EcoVadis has awarded Kuusakoski Recycling with a silver-level recognition. Kuusakoski ranks in the top 20 percent of companies assessed worldwide.

Kuusakoski has demonstrated its commitment to sustainable development by achieving the silver level in the EcoVadis assessment, globally acknowledged as a measure of sustainability. This achievement reflects the company's dedication to environmental responsibility, social accountability, and ethical business practices.

The EcoVadis assessment results are based on four main categories: environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement practices. Kuusakoski scored exceptionally well in the environmental category, significantly exceeding the average in all four categories.

AGENDA 2030

We are part of the UN's corporate responsibility initiative for sustainable development, Agenda 2030 In particular, we report on our progress against the five selected targets:

  • 8 - Decent work and economic growth
  • 9 - Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • 11 - Sustainable cities and communities
  • 12 - Responsible consumption and production
  • 13 - Climate action.

Read below to find out what these goals mean for us in practice.

8. Decent work and Economic growth

8. Decent work and Economic growth

As a responsible employer, human rights, non-discrimination, diversity of employees and equal rights are important to us. A well-paid, skilled and valued workforce is therefore a prerequisite for our success. We carry out regular staff surveys to ensure that the experiences and opinions of all our employees are presented in a structured way and to find out our areas for development. We are also constantly working to make ourselves a safer place to work, with a target of zero accidents.

9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Kuusakoski aims to promote responsible production and continuously invests in more efficient and lower-emission production methods and innovations. In 2022, we launched a multi-year green investment programme that will take our operations step by step towards emission-free production. As part of the investment programme, Kuusakoski is building its first carbon-neutral steel recycling plant.

11. Sustainable cities and Communities

11. Sustainable cities and Communities

Sustainability and the circular economy are the cornerstones of our operations. We want to be at the heart of sustainability work and reduce our global carbon footprint by increasing the amount of recyclable raw materials, while focusing also on the quality of our products. We are an important local player in many regions and discussions with decision-makers, authorities, neighbours and other stakeholders are an important part of our efforts to take local environmental concerns into account and improve our day-to-day operations.

12. Responsible Consumption and Production

12. Responsible Consumption and Production

For Kuusakoski, responsible consumption and production means sustainability throughout the life cycle of products, raw materials and production. Our operations promote circular economy and ensure a longer life cycle for products and raw materials. Our recycling rate is already high, and we aim to improve it further in the future through better and more efficient recycling methods. We also aim to reduce emissions from our production so that we achieve carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2035 at the latest.

13. Climate Action

13. Climate Action

At Kuusakoski, climate action primarily means improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions throughout the value chain. Our goal is carbon neutrality in our own operations by 2035, and carbon neutrality in the entire value chain by 2050. Through improving our own operations and products, we also enable our customers' climate successes.

Global Compact

At Kuusakoski, sustainability is at the heart of our operations, and we want to be actively involved in solving the challenges of sustainable development. As a continuation of our ambitious sustainability work, we have joined the UN Global Compact corporate responsibility initiative. As a company, we are committed to supporting and complying with the ten universally accepted principles on labour, human rights, the environment and anti-corruption.

Ahead of target

Reducing emissions from our own operations and throughout the value chain is an important goal for Kuusakoski that we will continue to take forward in the coming years. Our goal is to make Kuusakoski Recycling’s operations carbon neutral by 2035 (Scope 1 and Scope 2) and to have an entirely carbon neutral value chain by 2045 (Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3).

In 2023 we reported faster-than-target progress in the long-term climate goals.
